Hurricane Island Summer Programs
The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership provides extraordinary opportunities to discover what it takes to make a difference in the world – as students, scientists, citizens, and leaders! Sitting 12 miles off the coast of Rockland, ME, this beautiful off-the-grid community is an ideal setting for middle and high school programs in science, sustainability, and leadership. Our hands-on 1-2 week summer programs invite students to immerse themselves in the natural world, challenging them to explore and ask questions like trained naturalists in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Programs are small (with a maximum of 12 students) and are led by trained field scientists and educators, providing a level of instructor expertise and maturity you won’t find in other summer experiences. We have programs in Sustainability (HS), Marine Biology (HS and MS), and Island Ecology (HS and MS). Financial Aid is available! Are you interested in becoming a bird bander? This year Hurricane Island is happy to offer Beginner Bird Banding and Advanced Bird Banding workshops taught by world-class instructors from The Institute for Bird Populations. Bird banding data are useful in both research and management projects. By banding birds, we can identify individuals and track their dispersal and migration, behavior and social structure, life-span and survival rate, and reproductive success and population growth. Ocean Science & Technology Class Field Trip Opportunity in Woods Hole
Zephyr Education Foundation is once again hosting school class field trips in Woods Hole.
The program consists of a hands-on 1 1/2 hour scientific cruise on Vineyard Sound, time spent in WHOI’s specimen tank room, a tour of one of the scientific docks, and time with our Augmented Reality Coastal Processes Modeling System. Visits to WHOI’s Exhibit Center and NOAA’s Science Aquarium can also be arranged. Each year over 2000 students come to Woods Hole and participate in our program. Would you like to learn how to connect your students to the local marine environment in an innovative and adventurous way? Or how to expand the learning experience beyond the boundaries of the classroom and into the natural environment? Then come and venture out into the field and learn how New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) has been teaching engaging STEM-education in an adventurous way and creating ocean stewards for the last 10 years. Each day will focus on how to successfully guide a group of students through hands-on learning, which is connected and relevant to the NGSS and Ocean Literacy Standards. Participants will meet at each location except on boat days where the meeting location is NESS. Boat days are limited to 6 participants.

Marine Technology for Teachers and Students (MaTTS) Project
– Now accepting applications!
The Marine Technology for Teachers and Students (MaTTS) Project, based at the University of Rhode Island’s Inner Space Center and the University of Connecticut’s Avery Point campus, will be accepting high school teachers for a year-long professional development opportunity. The project focuses on providing teachers and students hands on and virtual experiences with new technologies related to exploring the global ocean and discovering pathways to marine careers using these new tools. Participating teachers will engage colleagues and students at their school, receive training, and gain experience in marine and ocean science technologies and receive a stipend.
Application deadline is Friday, January 8, 2015.

High School Marine Science Symposium
The Massachusetts Marine Educators (MME) have been hosting a High School Marine Science Symposium since 1984. This event attracts hundreds of high schoolers and their teachers to come together and learn about research and practice around marine science topics and issues. This event features both keynote speakers in a plenary format as well as hands-on break-out workshops led by scientists, policymakers, graduate students, and others engaged in marine-related careers. It is co-sponsored by the Northeastern University Marine Science Center, with additional support from Salem State University.

Alexandria, VA – The Education Committees of the American Salvage Association (ASA) together with the North American Marine Environmental Protection Association (NAMEPA) announce a special awards competition for marine science projects conducted at the high school and undergraduate college levels. This initiative is intended to highlight the importance of preserving the marine environment through the use of sound environmental practices, to raise awareness of the art and science of marine salvage, and to promote careers in the salvage and maritime industries.
Experimental science or engineering projects involving marine sciences that were conducted in 2015 at the high school or undergraduate college level are eligible. Projects should focus on one of the following broad marine science areas: Marine Environmental Care, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Meteorology, Underwater Robotics, Air Emissions from Ships, Alternative Fuel Supplies for Ships, Oil and Chemical Spill Remediation, Offshore Well Control, Diving Systems, Marine Biology, Marine Ecosystems, Marine Microorganisms, Ship Design, Ship Breaking, Recovery of Sunken Ships, Cargo, Fuel or Pollutants, related Marine Salvage or Marine Environmental projects.
Project abstracts of 300 words or less and a technical paper describing the project will be accepted from September 1, 2015- October 1, 2015. Winners will be notified on or before October 15, 2015.
Competition will be divided into 2 groups for prizes: High School 9-12th grades and College/University undergraduate students. 1st place winners will be invited to receive their awards at an industry function event of the American Salvage Association and/or the North American Marine Environmental Protection Association (NAMEPA) in the fall of 2015.
All papers will be considered for awards by both ASA and NAMEPA. Papers may win prizes in both contests.

Registration now open for 2014 High School Marine Science Symposium on March 20
The Massachusetts Marine Educators (MME) have been hosting a High School Marine Science Symposium since 1984. This event attracts hundreds of high schoolers and their teachers to come together and learn about research and practice around marine science topics and issues. The event features both keynote speakers in a plenary format as well as hands-on break-out workshops led by scientists, policymakers, graduate students, and others engaged in marine-related careers.
Building on the success and popularity of the event, which had been held at Umass-Dartmouth since 1993, MME decided to launch a North Shore event as well. Held at Endicott College in Beverly, the first North Shore High School Marine Science Symposium was held in March of 2013. Between two events, last year MME reached over 500 high schoolers, 60 teachers, and engaged 35 marine-related professionals in this event, as well as numerous volunteers.
Both events run from 8:00am to 1:00pm on Thursday, March 20th, and the cost is $10 per student. Teachers and chaperones attend at no cost. Registration is now open for the 2014 events. Click on the links below for more information:
Science Fair Judges Needed!
The Massachusetts State Science & Engineering Fair (MSSEF) is looking for more than 300 judges to donate their time to evaluate middle and high school students’ independent research projects in science and engineering.
Now in its 63rd year, the annual statewide fair will feature projects of hundreds of students from across the Commonwealth. The event is Friday, May 4 at MIT in Cambridge, MA from 10am-5:30pm.
Judges are required to hold a four-year college degree in a science or technology subject, or work in a related field. Individuals interested in judging may register online.

Teachers on the Estuary Workshops
This summer, two of the New England National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERRs) are offering 4-day “Teachers on the Estuary” (TOTE) professional development workshops. These research and field-based workshops, geared towards middle and high school teachers, are designed to improve teachers’ and students’ understanding of estuaries using local research examples. Sea TURTLE Accepting Applications for 2012 Program
The New England Aquarium announces the 2012 Sea TURTLE (Teen Underwater Research, Training and Learning Expedition) program is now accepting applications.
Students in grades 10, 11 & 12 can earn Open Water SCUBA diving certification with a team of peers, immerse themselves in the marine biology of New England, and then safely test their diving skills on a local overnight expedition. Applicants must be strong swimmers, and should provide evidence of interest in marine science. Preference is given to those who that have participated in another Aquarium teen program(including Teen Ocean Summit), although is not required to apply. The program fee is $1,700. Need-based scholarships are available for a limited number of applicants. All applications must be submitted by April 2.
