Hidden Oil and Gas Plumes in the Gulf

From Science Nation, the National Science Foundation online magazine:

Below the surface, thousands of marine creatures are still in danger from Gulf oil disaster

University of Georgia oceanographer Samantha Joye, like most scientists, always has a plan. Especially when it involves complex, expensive research cruises.

Deep Sea Ecosystems Online Course

In light of all of the interest in background information related to the Gulf of Mexico and the recent oil spill, NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research and the College of Exploration will offer a Deep Sea Ecosystems- Gulf of Mexico course October 11-29, 2010.  Registration is now open.

This offering is free for all participants and will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Educators will have the option to receive one Professional Development Credit from California State University at Fullerton ($100) or to obtain a certificate of completion to reflect 10 hours of professional development.  Note: Participants are responsible for ensuring their educational institution will accept professional development credit from California State University.

NOAA Oil Spill Updates

NOAA Fisheries Service continues to provide data, plan surveys, and protocols to the recovery effort in the Gulf of Mexico. For daily updates regarding this effort please see the Unified Command’s Joint Information Center and the NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration. For fishery-specific oil-related regulatory actions (i.e., closures and reopenings) please see the NOAA Fisheries Service Southeast Regional Office website. Oil Spill Effect on Salt Marshes

In this 10-min video, Dr Irv Mendelssohn, Louisiana State University School of the Coast and Environment, describes oil impacts on salt marshes.  He describes factors that determine whether the marsh will die and factors to consider when deciding what action, if any, should be taken to decontaminate marshes.  This is a must see for anyone who would like to know how to respond when asked what the oil spill will do to salt  marshes.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFc_PS9dd40
