Online PD Workshop for Educators: Why Do We Explore?

NOAA Ocean Exploration and Research Program Announces Why Do We Explore? , An Online Professional Development Workshop for Educators of All Grade Levels
June 21- July 2, 2010 (this is a repeat of the course offered in October 2009) in partnership with the College of Exploration

Join NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research for the second workshop in a series of educator professional development opportunities focused around NOAA’s new ship and America’s Ship for Ocean Exploration, the /Okeanos Explorer/. This workshop will introduce the new /Okeanos Explorer /Education Materials Collection built around the themes: Why Do We Explore?, How Do We Explore? and What Do We Expect to Find? Scientific presenters and education facilitators will work with participants to delve into the benefits of ocean exploration targeting climate change, energy, human health and ocean health. Interact with ocean explorers, converse and share classroom applications with other educators, and find a wealth of multimedia resources. We will introduce the first in a series of Leader’s Guides for Classroom Explorers entitled Why Do We Explore?, with its companion Initial Inquiry Lesson, To Boldly Go…, as well as additional lesson plans and other resources.

This workshop is free for all participants and will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Educators will have the option to receive graduate credit (fee for the credit) or obtain a certificate of completion.

Seminars – Coastal Maine Ecology

Eagle Hill offers seminars and workshops for people interested in understanding, addressing, and solving complex ecological questions, focusing on the natural history of the coast of eastern Maine from Acadia National Park to Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge and beyond. Most seminars combine field studies with follow-up lab studies and a review of the literature.  Upcoming seminars include:

Long Island Sound Teacher Workshops

This year, there are three Long Island Sound Mentor Teacher workshops to choose from, facilitated by Connecticut Sea Grant via funding from the EPA Long Island Sound Study. Each workshop costs only $10, and includes resources for each participant to take back to the classroom.

ISLAND CRUISE: How to have a blast with the science standards! Saturday, September 26, 2009, 8am-4pm, Outer Island, Stony Creek, CT All educators (grades six through eight) can spend a “day on an island” with Long Island Sound Mentor Teachers Beth Taylor and Ellen Dworkin on Outer Island, one of the Thimble Islands off the Southern coast of Connecticut.  Learn how to engage students in the exploration of a unique, natural area while still covering the science standards.  Contact Beth Taylor (etaylor@branford.k12.ct.us)

PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE WATERS: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Long Island Sound. Learn how to integrate Long Island Sound into your curriculum and excite your students about your discipline! Saturday September 26th from 8:45- 3:30 pm in New Haven, CT, led by Long Island Sound Mentor teachers Karen Beitler and Marge Drucker.  Free sail aboard the Schooner Quinnipiac and learn about New Haven Harbor and Long Island Sound.  Spend the afternoon receiving lesson plans, activities and resources for your classroom.  All disciplines are welcome.  We will have lessons & activities for grades 5-10 in Science, English, Reading, Writing, Math, History and adaptable to Foreign Language, Music and Arts.  Contact Karen Beitler

TEACH AT THE BEACH! Friday, October 2 from 9AM – 3PM (rain or shine) at Hammonassett Beach State Park in Madison, CT.  Led by veteran Long Island Sound Mentor Teachers Donna Rand and Donna DuBaldo. Learn how to organize a field study on Long Island Sound, apply science inquiry skills,  learn science concepts!
